DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham County deputy killed a dog last week that authorities said "charged aggressively" toward him.

The incident occurred at 113 Waltz Road on Feb. 26.

Two deputies responding to a domestic disturbance observed two large dogs acting aggressively and asked that the owner restrain them, authorities said. One dog was put in another room, and the second was placed in a kennel.

While the deputies were talking a woman and her daughter about the domestic disturbance, someone opened the door to the nearby room, letting one of the dogs loose, authorities said.

"A large pit-hound mix dog charged aggressively toward a deputy who shot it as the dog lunged at the deputy’s face," the Durham County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Wednesday.

The statement said the dog weighed 58 pounds.

"As with all grievances, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough review of the events leading up to the shooting incident," the statement said.
