DURHAM, N.C. — It was an emotional Sunday at Westover Park in Durham.
Matthew Simpson’s wife Allison was barely fighting back tears - talking about her husband Matthew.

”This has been the most horrific thing," said Simpson. ”We built a really beautiful life together and he really loved his community."

That same community came together to ride in his honor and to support his wife and family in wake of the unimaginable.

On July 10, Allison and Matthew were riding their bikes, with Allyson pulling their two children in a trailer. Matthew was hit by a vehicle when he crossed Guess Road.

He died of his injuries days later and police are still searching for the man who hit him - Omari Newsome.

Bike Durham organized Sunday's memorial gathering and ride of silence.

”This hits hard when a tragedy strikes like this. We want to remember Matt, we want to honor his memory," said John Tallmadge with Bike Durham.

Bikers started with a crossing of Guess Road where Matt was struck by the vehicle and ended up back at Westover Park, riding just over 3 miles.

”You should never have a situation where somebody doesn’t come home because a car hits them," said Tallmadge. ” There are lots of people here who share the emotion share the grief and want to do something about it."

Newsome’s charges include felony hit-and-run with serious injuries, failure to reduce speed and failure to stop at a steady red light.

If you know him or know where he is you're asked to call 911.
