DURHAM, N.C. — A number of brides and grooms have had to make some tough choices – many canceling or postponing their long-planned weddings.

But one Durham couple took a different approach.

They took their wedding virtual.

A Durham couple was supposed to get married in Savannah, Ga. COVID-19 canceled those plans.

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday. Perfect weather for a wedding on Zoom.

Adam Persky and Kathryn Fuller spent months planning the perfect day in Savannah, Ga. COVID-19 canceled those plans.

"We didn't want today to go and be a sad day for us for losing," Persky said at the beginning of the ceremony, holding back tears. "What would have been our wedding day," Fuller finished.

Instead, they took the ceremony -- and the party -- online.

"And what else were people going to do during a Saturday in quarantine?" Persky asked his guests.

The couple tied the knot in their Durham backyard with just the two of them physically there and a neighbor taking photos from a distance. Their officiant led the ceremony from Kentucky.

Dozens of friends and family members were "virtually" there, too.

The ceremony was still emotional with some guests in tears. It even included a first dance.

Looking back on it, the couple says they made the right choice.

"It was a million times better than I ever thought it would've gone," Fuller added.

Persky said, "I think we get caught up in the food, the decorations. This was bare bones. It was about us and celebrating with our friends."

As other couples consider their wedding plans, Persky and Fuller have some advice:

"It is about you and the one you love," Fuller said.

Persky added: "I think it really got back to what the event is about. It's not about having this massive party. It's more about us."

A Zoom wedding can still accomplish that.

The couple says they plan to hold a reception to celebrate in person with their friends and family when they can. Right now the plan is to do that on September 5 at a venue in Chapel Hill.
