DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham city councilman is calling for a performance audit of the Durham Police Department.

Howard Clement said the audit would allow the department's next chief to start work with "a clean analysis of what's going on."

Clement, who made the proposal during the first of a series of work sessions, said a review of the department's operations is overdue.

Clement has supported Mayor Bill Bell's push for an outside review of the department's handling of the Duke lacrosse case.
