Durham community center damaged, vandalized for 2nd time in a week
Broken windows, sinks and toilets smashed to pieces was just some of the damage to a community center in Durham.
Posted — Updated"To know the very next day that we were hit yet again and this time, computer monitors were found in the Burton Park area," said Sanders.
New locks are on the front door and boards on the backdoor to keep the vandals out.
Durham residents who rely on the center for job resources and programs for children are now at a disadvantage.
"We try to make things as accessible as possible for our community," said Sanders. "So not to have that space anymore kind of puts us in a place of trying to think of the next best option."
Jason Jones with Durham Parks and Recreation said the degree of destruction is forcing the center to stay closed until further notice.
Leaders are now looking to the community to bring the center back better than before.
"We've received outreach [and] people that are wanting to help from the DA’s office [in] Durham County," said Sanders. "Representatives at Hawkins have reached out to us wanting to help."
