The Durham City Council condemned Councilwoman DeDreana Freeman Tuesday for placing blame on the city attorney after a meeting last week.

“It’s unfortunate that my use of profanity was captured, but I believe the profane actions of City Attorney [Rehberg] set us down this path," Freeman said in a statement to WRAL News.

In a statement provided to WRAL News by the city council, the council said the statements made by Freeman inaccurately portray the city attorney's role in recent events and "unfairly characterize her actions."

"Members of the council, in fact, requested that the city attorney provide a statement to be read at the March 23rd work session regarding the corruption allegations against Council Member Monique Holsey-Hyman," the statement read. "[Rehberg] has been entirely transparent and responsive and has in no way overstepped her role as the city attorney."

The council said Rehberg didn't warrant the criticisms, and she has the council's "unequivocal support."

The statement was endorsed by all members of the council except for Freeman, Holsey-Hyman and the mayor.
