DURHAM, N.C. — The Glass Jug Beer Lab in Durham is collecting food, cleaning supplies and money for local nonprofits in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

The brewery will be collecting the items for the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina and the Durham Rescue Mission.

Business owners say they were inspired to start the collection drive because of the large number of public schools closing in the area, leaving a lot of children in the community without the school meals they depend on, leaving families to turn to food banks, which are already struggling to provide enough food.

"Durham Rescue Mission is crowded and unable to close, because the homeless have nowhere else to turn," owners wrote on the business' Facebook page.

Members of the community are asked to bring donations to the Glass Jug Beer Lab Bottle Shop at 5410 NC Highway 55 in Durham through March 22.

These are the items being requested:

  • Food (to be donated to the Durham location of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina)
  • Cleaning supplies (to be donated to the Durham Rescue Mission)
  • Cash donations (for the Food Bank)
