DURHAM, N.C. — Like most fundraising events, the 2020 Walk for the Animals put on by the Animal Protection Society in Durham had to change its plans due to coronavirus. But instead of postponing the walk or experimenting with a fundraiser from home, the organizers got creative.

On Saturday, May 23 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Animal Protection Society of Durham is still hosting the walk they had planned -- but instead of gathering in a group together, the society is asking for participants to walk on their own.

Walkers won't totally be alone -- family members who live with the participants and pets can walk too.

The APS asks participants to walk their animals in a safe location of their choice while maintaining social distancing. Local businesses can sign up to be sponsors online.

Walkers will be also be encouraged to record video and post their individual walks on social media using the hashtag #WalkWithMe2020. They can also buy a T-shirt online beforehand.

The APS said in a press release they expect hundreds of people to participate and that taking part in a fundraiser like this is a way to be able to keep these shelters operating.

Shafonda Davis of APS in Durham said a concern for these shelters is more people will try to surrender their animals during a pandemic.

"If it's just a lack of resources, that's something we can help with," Davis said. "We really prefer to keep animals in homes and much as possible."
