DURHAM, N.C. — An 8-year old girl in Durham has a lot to celebrate. During her recent battle with cancer, she decided to help raise money to help other people going through the same thing.

What Harper Harrell did was no small feat, raising nearly $20,000 in a relatively short time.

A January 18th video kicked off the  "Brave Like Harper" Campaign".

Fast forward a couple weeks and Harrell has a big announcement.

"We just got the call that I don't have anymore cancer in my bone marrow!" said Harrell in another video.

Last October, Harrell was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or ALL.

A type of blood and bone marrow cancer affecting white blood cells.

Chemotherapy and other treatments are expensive.

"We thought about how we can make ourselves feel better about what we're going through by helping others who may not be as well-positioned as we are," said Heather Hindin, Harrell's mom.

Then came the "Peace Out Cancer" t-shirts Harper designed and sold online, reeling in roughly $20,000 from donors.

"She's a remarkable kid and always has been," said Hindin.

Half of the proceeds will go toward cancer research through the V Foundation.

The other half will help cover Harper's medical needs.

"If you want to do something do it, because you have to follow your dreams. It's the best part of life," said Harrell.

There are 4 days left in Harrell's fund-raising campaign.
