DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Police Department said an 11-month-old is recovering after the baby nearly drowned in his family's bathtub on Sunday.

The baby is in the ICU at Duke Hospital, police said.

On Sunday, first responders responded to the home on Leon Street around 12:30 p.m. Police said a family member handed the baby, who was not breathing and did not have a pulse, to Officer E.L. Gomez, who administered CPR until he began breathing on his own.

When paramedics arrived, they continued to treat the child and transported him to the hospital.

"Gomez was alone and surrounded by hysterical family members but was able to keep her cool," said her supervisor, Cpl. C.J. Wisnieski. “In my opinion this child was saved by Ofc. Gomez’s quick actions and her ability to perform high quality CPR in an extremely unstable environment."

According to Wisnieski, Gomez is new to the Durham Police Department.
