COATS, N.C. — A 20-year-old Dunn man died in a head-on collision south of Coats in Harnett County Saturday morning, state troopers said.

A Toyota sedan driven by Larry Surles on N.C. Highway 55 East, near Erwin Chapel Road, crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, troopers said. Surles over-corrected, causing his car to hit an oncoming Suzuki sedan.

Surles died of his injuries at the scene.

Troopers said the Suzuki driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver's mother identified her as Amber Hicks, 18, of Coats, and said she broke one leg. She was in fair condition at WakeMed Sunday.

Troopers said that Surles was at fault in the wreck, so no charges will be filed. It's unknown why he crossed the center line.
