RALEIGH, N.C. — Every day, nearly four people in North Carolina die from a drug overdose. On Monday, a health initiative at North Hills aims to beat those odds.

An important list identifies the six most addictive prescription drugs out there -- Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Morphine, Methadone and Fentanyl.

Health officials say if you have these prescription medications around the house and they're expired or you're no longer using them, you need to get rid of them immediately and properly.

Operation Medicine Drop, an event taking place at North Hills between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., is the perfect place to abandon those bottles. Event organizers say it's not just an opportunity to get rid of unused medicines the right way -- it's also an opportunity to raise awareness.

The event, taking place in Midtown Park, is a joint effort in Wake County among law enforcement and health officials.

According to officials, the average North Carolinian fills 17 prescriptions annually. Studies show that as much as 40 percent of the drugs dispensed are never used. The goal of Operation Medicine Drop is to keep those drugs from being abused, which could lead to tragic consequences.

No syringes, lotions or over-the-counter meds are allowed at the event.
