DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University has identified its first coronavirus cluster of the spring semester.

Officials said a cluster was identified at Berkshire Ninth Street apartment complex, on 9th Street.

A cluster is defined by the state Department of Health and Human Services as five or more related cases that are deemed to be in close proximity of time and location.

The five students in the cluster are now isolating in a separate location.

Officials said contract tracers have identified others who may have had close contact with a person who tested positive for the virus.

DHHS defines close contact as someone who has been within six feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes when either person was not wearing a face covering.

Those who were in closed contact have been notified and are quarantining.
