DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University lifted its stay-in-place order for undergraduate students on Sunday morning.

Duke leaders say the order drove COVID-19 cases down significantly. Duke feels students attending "recruitment parties for selective living groups" brought on the surge in cases, prompting the order.

The university was prepared to extend the order if necessary. The order was announced on March 13.

Some Duke students said fraternities and their parties were the root of the spike in cases.

The council who oversees nine Duke fraternities plans to start a hotline where COVID-19 violations can be reported.

The university still asks that students living in Duke-provided housing remain on campus and only leave for "essential travel and wellness-related activities" through March 28. Students who live off-campus can only visit campus for classes and essential academic activities.

Students must follow guidance for indoor gatherings, which should be limited to 10 people or fewer. All in-person courses are resuming their standard order for the semester.
