DURHAM, N.C. — A man charged in the shooting death of a Duke University graduate student faces more charges in connection with crimes not relating to that case.

A grand jury this week indicted Stephen Lavance Oates on a number of charges including assault with a deadly weapon with attempt to kill, robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted robbery.

Oates was served with arrest warrants on six charges Tuesday. His case is scheduled to be in court the first week in June.

The 19-year-old was arrested in January in connection with the Jan. 18 death of Abhijit Mahato, 29.

Prosecutors believe Oates robbed Mahato at gunpoint and stole $200, a wallet and a cell phone from him. They believe that Oates held up three other people at gunpoint that same day.

Oates was also indicted in February in connection with a series of robberies dating to November.
