RALEIGH, N.C. — Two Duke Raleigh Hospital employees became sick on Thursday after eating homemade cookies.

According to a patient who was at the hospital at the time, the employees said they received the cookies from a patient.

The two employees' symptoms were "concerning," according to a spokesperson with Duke Health.

No patients or other staff members consumed the cookies, the spokesperson said.

"We take the matter seriously and have referred it to the Raleigh Police Department for investigation," Duke Health said in a statement.

One patient told WRAL News that she became concerned when she saw the employee "slumped over." The patient had to call for help, and people who rushed to her aid said she had an elevated heart rate.

“About 30 minutes before, another nurse had also become ill eating the same cookies and was admitted and hooked up to an IV and was pretty ill from that," the patient said.
