Friday and Monday are expected to be the busiest days at Raleigh-Durham International Airport over Memorial Day weekend.

<p>Raleigh Durham Airport Authority. I want to talk to you a little bit this morning about the Memorial Day weekend, but we also want to share a big announcement about new and returning flights that Frontier is bringing. We have jennifer de la Cruz here from Frontier and she's gonna come up here in just a minute and talk about some of those flights were very happy to be joined by her today. But first let me talk to you a little bit about what travelers can expect this weekend when they come to the airport over the next few days. In addition to all of those expanded options, that Frontier is going to be offering the summer season as you may know, is the busiest time of year here at R. D. U. We actually see more traffic between May and august than we see during the winter holidays between thanksgiving and New Year's. So we expect a very busy couple of months ahead as we look forward to. That busy summer travel season. Memorial Day of course kicks off the summer season and we expect to welcome more than 138,000 passengers over the next couple of days between friday and monday. That compares to about 100 and 3000 passengers that we saw over Memorial Day weekend last year. So a potential increase of nearly 35% year over year for the Memorial Day weekend Today and Monday will be the busiest days. We expect to see about 37,700 passengers on Friday and Monday. So definitely very busy days today and also coming up, you know, T. S. A. Is predicting that traffic will meet and sometimes even exceed pandemic levels during the summer. So we are looking at a very very busy season and of course the recovery is well underway for R. D. U. And airports and airlines. We have shifted from recovery to growth boat and it's a great thing to see here at R. D. You were restarting construction and capital projects that were paused back in 2020 and that includes an expansion of the security checkpoint right here Behind me, we're adding two lanes that will move from 12 to 14 over the next couple of weeks and help passengers during this busy season get through security T. S. A. Has also added new technology at the checkpoints. That's going to enhance security and reduce physical contact when you're going through the line. Now that technology also improves the passenger experience because it allows you to keep more items in your carry on bags during the screening process. And just a couple of tips for people as they're going through because it will be a little bit different passengers will need to put everything in a bin when they go through the checkpoint. You can't put anything on the belt anymore. So if you're used to coming in and putting your purse or a bag or your jacket on the belt. Everything has to go in the bin. Now we will have all new lanes expecting to have the new equipment in june so everything in terminal one and terminal two will be upgraded by june and argue will have additional members of our guest experience team, you'll see them throughout the airport. They help people check in, get their baggage taken care of, get through security. We have extra people who will be here between friday and monday who will be helping people out particularly with the checkpoints as they get used to those new procedures and the lanes will be opening at four a.m. So we always tell you to get here early. We'll be here as well. We're also improving our roads on campus. There's construction happening on international Drive. We're repaving that. So if you come in the airport through the lonely road entrance, you'll see some of that construction and we want to make sure if you're taking that entrance that you give yourself a little bit of extra time, not just this weekend, but really through november, when that project will conclude. And if you're picking someone up from the airport this weekend, just a couple of tips, wait until they get off the plane and have time to get their bags before you come pick them up. So we don't have all that crowding on the curbs outside the terminals. One place that's really convenient is 1000 trade drive. It's our cell phone lot. You'll know it probably is the area near the rental car companies. It's free. You can stay there until your passenger calls you and says they're ready to be picked up And you can also pick people up on both levels here in Terminal two. So usually you have departures and arrivals on different curves this weekend and throughout the summer and you'll be able to pick them up in both places. So we hope that will help speed things up as we go through these busy couple of months that we have coming up and of course as always we recommend that you arrived two hours early for a domestic flight and three hours early for international flights which we have more of coming up and more that we've seen recently that will let you get through the roads, find a parking space and get through campus, get to your gate on time. So now let's talk about the Frontier expansion. We are very excited about their continued and growing investment here in Raleigh Durham. They've launched eight new routes in april and May and we're very excited to have a very popular destination taking off today. That's new Orleans this afternoon. It's a destination our customers enjoy and we lost it during the pandemic. So we're very happy to have that back. They're also bringing us a brand new route which is Newburgh new york, that's something we haven't had here at R. D. U. Before. So a brand new nonstop destination for us. Thanks to Frontier. So let's go to jennifer now and she's going to talk to someone about the expansion here and what our travelers can expect. This Frontier brings us more new, affordable options here at R. D. U. Thank you. Good morning everyone. Well on behalf of Frontier Airlines were very excited to be here today to celebrate a lot of new service from Raleigh Durham as Stephanie was touching upon, we're starting flights from Cincinnati Indianapolis, Newburgh new york, my birth town of Detroit michigan and one of my favorite destinations in the US, which is new Orleans for sure. About a month ago we added service to Syracuse and I slipped in new york and another beautiful spot. Another favorite of mine which is providence Rhode island. Uh we currently served 22 destinations from Raleigh Durham. This is the most of any carrier operating from this airport. A number of those routes give consumers in this area connecting options. Frontier has over 100 destinations throughout the US Caribbean and latin. America. That's great for consumers because Frontier is an ultra low cost carrier and uh us consumers really need that choice. They need the low fare option to be able to travel uh and it's gonna be a big summer of travel. We're excited to keep growing at Raleigh Durham, we have more than 230 aircraft on order at frontier. So we've got some big prospects for growth and we look forward to sharing and some of that with our partners here at R. D. You going forward, we're also America's greenest airline, hence my shirt. And that means we, we are America's greenest airline based on fuel efficiency. That's, that's how we earned that moniker. Uh, we have an ultramodern, highly fuel efficient aircraft, Airbus aircraft fleet and based on some of our initiatives, our luggage practices, etcetera. It makes our aircraft lighter than, than a lot of other airlines. And that gives us that fuel efficiency. So if you want to feel good from an environmental standpoint and choosing the best airline from a green standpoint, you can feel good about flying for a tear. For that reason. We are excited to have arrived at Memorial Day. It looks like it's going to be a blockbuster weekend. Let's hope the weather cooperates with us across the eastern half of the country. Um, and travel this summer is returning with a vengeance consumers are booking and they're ready for summer vacations. We are ready for them. We know our partners at Raleigh Durham already as well. Uh, we look forward to continuing to partner with the airport and the community here. Uh, and continuing to provide low fares done right to people in the Raleigh Durham area. Thank you very much. But of course if we have storms, you might expect to see some delays and cancelations, sometimes you see a ripple effect. So we'll be looking at the boards today and looking to see what's delayed, what's canceled. And of course passengers should always go to R. D dot com or call the airline in advance because that's the best way to tell. Certainly if your flight is going to be delayed, you'd want to know that before you get here when you have an approaching storm Stephanie. What are some of the things that may happen behind the scenes out of the airport like this? Well behind the scenes, our operations team is very busy when we have any kind of implement weather. So today the thunderstorms for example, you know, we could see delays and cancelations but we'll be working to make sure the runways are clear looking for debris, making sure that everything is safe and sound and ready to go up to see those passengers take off today and get to their Memorial Day destination. You guys were talking about how this could be a really big weekend and then go off in previous. Sometimes when there's been a lot of traffic, there's no concerns about fighting parking spots and things like that. Anything being done in that way We do have the parking garage reaching capacity. Sometimes getting close to capacity. We also have the park economy three lot, which is on your way in from I-40, we have other lots that we can open up. You probably remember that. We close some during the pandemic but we do have contingency plans in place. So if we do need extra parking this weekend we have the ability to open that up. Alright. Thanks everybody. I'm meteorologist, Elizabeth Gardner. It's going to be an interesting week for us. We're going to have a very summerlike pattern. It's going to be hot and humid, but a lot of cloud cover and a good chance for afternoon and evening storms. Some of those likely to be severe. We don't have as great a chance today, but it's not a zero chance that chance goes up for the next several days as we have a level one risk for both Tuesday and Wednesday, that chance may go up even higher on Thursday. Let's take a look. You can see a cluster of thunderstorms coming through Tennessee toward the mountains of North Carolina. We're going to see some of that rolling through here later on this, uh, this afternoon and evening, uh, check in Futurecast, heading out the door. We've had fairly quiet conditions. Um, you can see a little bit of sun there at lunch time and that will set the stage for a better chance for storms. Any sunshine that we see will energize the atmosphere and, uh, make it an even better recipe for scattered storms you can see there, uh, between three and five o'clock scattered thunderstorms that continues on through the evening, past midnight, tomorrow morning, we may end up with a few isolated showers and then some scattered thunderstorms on through the afternoon. This version of Futurecast doesn't show as much coverage but previous runs certainly have. So we are looking certainly at that chance for some scattered storms. We have that chance all the way through Friday. The biggest event may come with a cold front late Thursday into early Friday and we'll be watching the timeline for that gets closer. Highest this afternoon, mid to upper eighties. 84 in Raleigh, 83 in Durham, 88 in Fayetteville. Our muggy meter is climbing. It seems so early for this. We have yet to hit seventies with our dew 0.70 dew point really feels sticky. It's going to feel like the middle of July or August for us by mid to late week. But by Friday, we see much cooler air coming in behind Thursdays front and our due points drop back into the fifties. That's going to feel so much better. But 87 tomorrow, 90 Wednesday, 88 Thursday, that front though even though it may bring some humidity and some storms with it behind it, it will deliver some cooler drier air. Saturday looks phenomenal. At 74 morning, lows are back into the fifties Mother's Day. Just a small chance of thunderstorms otherwise very pleasant.
