NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies in New Hanover County arrested two people on drug charges Tuesday after a two-week investigation, Capt. David Ciamillo said.

Authorities first found cocaine in the car of Humberto Cortez Diaz, 40, and Enriqueta Aragon Sosa, 39, both of 506 Purdue Drive, during a traffic stop.

When they searched the couple's home, they found an additional 18 ounces of cocaine, including some hidden inside a boot and inside a stuffed toy rabbit, Ciamillo said.

A detective squeezed the toy, noticed it did not feel right and cut it open to find bags of cocaine wrapped in foil, Ciamillo said.

Both were being held at the New Hanover County jail Thursday under $850,000 secured bond. They face charges of possession, trafficking, and maintaining a dwelling for drugs. Diaz is also charged with driving without a license.

County authorities have also asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to investigate whether the suspects are in the country illegally.
