Drivers: Prepare for overnight I-440 closures in southwest Raleigh

Drivers traveling at night on Interstate 440 in Raleigh should prepare for a month of closures between Jones Franklin Road and Western Boulevard.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Drivers traveling at night on Interstate 440 in southwest Raleigh should prepare for what could be a month of closures between Jones Franklin Road and Western Boulevard.

I-440 W closing Monday, Aug. 15

Beginning Monday at 9 p.m., the state Department of Transportation will close one lane of I-440 westbound between Jones Franklin Road and Western Boulevard so crews can install concrete girders for the new Athens Drive bridge being built over I-440.

Then, between midnight and 5 a.m., all westbound lanes will close. Drivers traveling west will be detoured onto Western Boulevard and then onto Jones Franklin Road to get back on I-440.

The same closures and detours will continue Thursday night through the end of the week and possibly Saturday, if needed.

I-440 E closing Tuesday, Aug. 16

Beginning Tuesday at 9 p.m., one lane on I-440 eastbound will close, then all eastbound lanes will close between midnight and 5 a.m. The work will continue two nights, Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Eastbound drivers will be detoured onto Jones Franklin Road and then back onto Western Boulevard to get back on I-440.

According to the NCDOT, "After work is completed on the Athens Drive girder, crews will start working to demolish the old Jones Franklin Road bridge over I-440. Depending on weather, that work could begin as early as Aug. 22.

The various nightly closures could last for five weeks, depending on weather. The work is part of the I-440 improvement project.
