SELMA, N.C. — A driver was badly injured in a crash Wednesday when he tried to escape a Selma police officer.

Before 12:30 a.m., officers attempted to stop the driver, but the driver sped away.

According to police, the driver turned on a dead end street, swerved off the road and struck a tree.

His car nearly ended up in a creek, and the driver was severely pinned in his car. The front of his car was smashed in and badly damaged.

A police officer at the scene told WRAL News if the driver had gone any farther, he likely would have dropped about 10 feet off a cliff into the creek.

Selma and Smithfield firefighters worked for nearly an hour to get the man out of the car. He was later transported to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man had outstanding warrants, which is why officers believe he wouldn't stop.

Charges are pending.
