FOUR OAKS, N.C. — The driver of a vehicle was sent to the hospital after the vehicle they were driving was struck by at least one tire which came off a tractor trailer.

A trooper with the NC State Highway Patrol said the tractor trailer from New Jersey lost its two right-rear tires and wheel assembly while traveling southbound on Interstate 95 near Four Oaks on Tuesday afternoon. At least one of the tires bounced over the median cables and crashed head-on into the windshield of a northbound SUV.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries.

Troopers said the tractor trailer continued about another five miles without realizing what had happened.

The NC State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
