Driver of vehicle killed after head-on crash with Northampton County activity bus

— A vehicle crashed head-on with a Northampton County Schools activity bus on Friday. Nine of the children on the bus were sent to the hospital and the driver of the vehicle was killed, according to the NC State Highway Patrol.

Northampton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Pamela Chamblee, who was on the scene of the crash, told WRAL the activity bus was heading to a basketball game in Weldon when the accident happened just before 4 p.m. on Corbitt Drive and Country Club Drive in the Weldon area of Halifax County. There were 22 students on the bus, and nine were sent to Vidant North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.

None of the students' injuries were considered serious with injuries such as a bloody nose and bloody lip.

The NC State Highway Patrol confirmed the accident and the driver's death. Photos posted by The Daily Herald newspaper in Roanoke Rapids showed a car that had caught fire and was resting on the side of the road after the crash. Troopers were assisting in the crash along with Weldon police, the Weldon fire department and other officials.

There was no cause for the accident released as investigators continued to gather evidence. The area was cleared around 6:30 p.m. Friday.
