FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A police chase in Fayetteville ended in a wreck in a busy neighborhood Wednesday morning.

Police said Trevor David Holmes, 36, of 3211 Periwinkle Drive, tried to avoid a driver's license checkpoint at Blount and Glidden streets just before 11:30 a.m. Officers pulled him over, but he hit the gas when an officer asked about magazines visible on his back seat.

Officers followed Holmes at speeds reaching 80 mph to the corner of Bragg Boulevard and Glenwood Drive where he turned into the path of a truck, causing a wreck.

The driver of the truck, Robert Whitaker of Sanford, was not injured.

Holmes was flown to UNC-Chapel Hill where he was in critical condition Thursday.

A search of his vehicle yielded more than a pound of marijuana packaged for sale.
