WILSON, N.C. — A Wilson man was killed early Wednesday when his pickup hit a culvert on U.S. Highway 264 Alternate in Wilson County and flipped, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 a.m. near N.C. Highway 58, authorities said.

Michael Jerome Smith, 52, was westbound on U.S. 264 Alternate when he ran off the right side of the highway, and his 1997 Nissan pickup hit a culvert, authorities said. He was thrown from the truck as it overturned.

A passenger in the pickup, Timothy E. Speight, 41, of Wilson, was injured in the crash, authorities said. He was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment, and authorities said his injuries weren't considered life-threatening.

Highway Patrol troopers investigating the crash said speed was a factor and that they also suspected alcohol as a factor.
