RALEIGH, N.C. — The driver of a car was cited after failing to yield and being struck by an ambulance with a patient which was rushing to the hospital.

WRAL's Joe Fisher reports the Harnett County ambulance was hit by a car at South Saunders Street and Pecan Road on Saturday. The ambulance was en route to Wake Med with a critical patient in the back. Police said the ambulance had a red light on South Saunders and was attempting to clear an intersection with its lights and sirens activated when the car, traveling down Pecan Road, hit the ambulance.

Police said the patient in the ambulance stopped breathing during the crash and was revived by medics before getting transferred by a Wake County ambulance to the hospital.

Officials have not released information about the patient's current condition.

Police describe it as a minor crash. The man driving the car involved in the crash was cited for failing to yield.

Bobby Mitchell, the man driving the car involved in the wreck, was cited for failing to yeild.

By the time he saw the ambulance it was too late.

"I didn't hear the sirens," he said.
