Driver charged with DWI after woman killed in hit-and-run crash in Raleigh

A driver was arrested Thursday hours after a deadly hit-and-run crash south of downtown Raleigh.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A driver was arrested Thursday hours after a deadly hit-and-run crash south of downtown Raleigh.

The crash was reported around 12 a.m. on South Saunders Street at South Wilmington Street. Investigators said a woman was walking on the side of the road when she was struck by a car, and the driver fled the scene.

The woman died.

Police arrested James Douglas Virgin, 32, who was charged with driving while impaired, felony hit and run and failure to maintain lane control.

After a man was hit by car in Kenly on Tuesday, a 19-year-old turned himself in. The driver, Steven Rodriguez, told authorities he initially thought he hit a deer. At some point, he discovered he had actually hit a person on foot.

The victim in the Kenly crash is expected to make a full recovery.
