RALEIGH, N.C. — A woman crashed over the barricade near the intersection of Pleasant Grove Church Road and Airport Boulevard, her car rolling down the steep embankment and coming to rest in the water below.

The crash occurred early Friday morning about a mile from RDU airport.

According to an official with the Morrisville Fire Rescue, the woman drove straight through the intersection and right down the embankment, which was still slippery and muddy from rain.

When officials arrived, she was trying to climb up the embankment but was having trouble getting up there because of the mud and her shoes.

Officials said she only suffered mild injuries and is expected to be okay. However, she was charged with a DWI, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

By around 5 a.m., the driver's car headlights could still be seen way down the dark embankment. Within half an hour, crews had recovered the car from the creek.
