A driver died in a crash while fleeing from North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers on Saturday night, according to officials.

Officials were attempting to pull Chy-eem Dreqwon Bobbitt, 28, from Pennsylvania, over at around 8 p.m. on Cumberland Road. Authorities said Bobbitt was speeding when they tried to pull him over.

After the trooper activated his emergency equipment, Bobbitt stopped on the right shoulder of Boone Trail, officials said.

When the trooper approached the car, Bobbitt sped away north on Roxie Avenue. As the officer tried to catch up with the driver, he went off the roadway and struck a tree. Bobbitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials helped other passengers in the car that crashed and put out a small fire, the release said.

The passengers, identified as Gerald Douglas Raeford, Jr., 28, of Fayetteville, and Herbert Alexander Harris, Jr., 32, of Spring Lake, were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
