DURHAM, N.C.Durham Performing Arts Center is offering refunds for those who bought tickets for Les Misérables this weekend after the remaining performances were canceled.
The touring production of the popular Broadway show was scheduled to run through Sunday at the theater. The decision to cancel the shows came just hours before Friday night's performance.

"Most affected ticket buyers who purchased using a credit card should see a credit appear on the charge card account used for purchase within 2-3 weeks. This automatic refund includes those that purchased tickets online or by phone with DPAC or Ticketmaster, or in person using a credit card at The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Norht Carolina - Ticket Center at DPAC. If you purchased with cash, please return to the Ticket Center to obtain a refund," the venue posted on its website.

The venue had previously been only offering ticket exchanges for the show and not refunds. The move sparked an online petition.

Alex Allen, who started the petition, had three tickets for the Saturday night performance. He bought them in January for just over $600 total.

Allen said last week he was diagnosed with pneumonia, putting him in an at-risk category. When he called and asked for a refund, the only option given to him at the time was a ticket exchange.

He said he was eventually offered a refund, something he wanted everyone to have access to.

Allen said he plans to donate the money from his refund to the Durham food bank.

This isn't the first time DPAC has dealt with issues over refunds.

Through the years, snow and ice have left many asking for refunds for several Broadway touring shows at DPAC. Most touring Broadway shows have a policy not to cancel due to local road conditions or inclement weather. In those cases, exchanges are offered.

In January 2013, Whoopi Goldberg's show at DPAC went on as scheduled despite snow, sleet and icy road conditions.

According to the DPAC's weather policy: "In the case of extreme weather conditions DPAC does not contractually have the ability to cancel or postpone a performance, this decision has to be made by the management of the show that DPAC is hosting."

Calls and emails to DPAC have gone unanswered Friday.

Future shows at DPAC

DPAC is urging people who have tickets to future events at the theater to contact the venue three business days before their scheduled event for the latest updates and ticket exchange options.

In addition to Les Mis, DPAC has also canceled the "Evening of Entertainment" on March 19. The upcoming shows "The Color Purple," "The Choir of Man" and "American Ballet Theatre Giselle" are postponed.

Events at the venue after March 29 have not been affected as of now.

DPAC officials have been consulting with national trade association for the Broadway industry, The Broadway League, as the coronavirus situation evolves.

The venue has increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting all public and backstage areas and added alcohol-based sanitizer dispensers in the lobby.
