RALEIGH, N.C. — Dozens of people gathered in downtown Raleigh Saturday for a march in support of Ukraine.

The March was organized by Ukrainians in the Carolinas.

People from all walks of life gathered to March for peace for people in Ukraine.

Victoria Ekeya is from Russia and she says the images she’s seen from Ukraine are devastating and she’s calling on Russian soldiers to put down the guns.

“I’m here to support our brothers and sisters. Ukrainians don’t see us as brothers and sisters anymore and I do totally understand that, but for us they’re still brothers,” said Ekeya. “It’s heartbreaking the first day I saw that I collapsed crying and my kids didn’t understand what was happening,”

Ukrainians of the Carolinas are asking that the United States:

  • Provide air defense systems to Ukraine.
  • Expedite legislation for Ukrainian refugees to the US.
  • Secure humanitarian corridors into sieged cities of Ukraine.

Vlad Pavlenko is a foreign exchange student from Ukraine. He was supposed to go back in May and he said that may not be an option.

“The country that I left will be different from the country I will go back to. I hope everything will be all right and we will win,” said Pavlenko. “The first thing I do every morning when I wake up, I message my family just to make sure they’re alright.”

The group is also asking that people call their congressional representatives, senators and the White House to advocate

Aside from the march the group is also collecting baby diapers and baby formula for Ukraine.

They will be collecting all kinds of items to ship.
