Downtown Raleigh mural defaced with Confederate flag, racist messages

The mural depicts images of previous protests, but racist messages covered portions of the mural Wednesday night.

“It’s just outdated ignorance and you’re aware there are people out there in the world, but when you actually see it in person like this, it just brings together, more than ever, the idea that we need to come together in this country,” said Raleigh resident Christian Day.

Messages on the mural included the phrase “white boy” and a sketch of a Confederate flag.

“It’s absurd. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I can’t believe somebody would come by and do this,” said Roy Taylor, who works nearby. “I think they need a little more education in their lives.”

The mural was originally painted last summer on the Salisbury Street side of the Boylan-Pearce Building.

Officials said there are already plans in place to restore the mural.

Nobody has been charged in the vandalism.
