COMO, N.C. — Hertford County authorities are investigating a series of Sunday evening shootings that left three people dead and a fourth wounded.

Sheriff Juan Vaughan said the first shooting was reported on Hills Ferry Road in Como at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Larry Wayne Parker was shot and killed on his back porch, and the suspected gunman drove off in a dark pickup, Vaughan said.

About 20 minutes later, someone reported that a pickup fitting that description had wrecked on Boones Bridge Road. When deputies arrived at the scene, they heard a gunshot, Vaughan said, and they found Samuel Nash Long II, 38, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At 7 p.m., a caller reported a shooting at United Turf Inc.'s turf farm in Murfreesboro. Simon Torres Carreno, 49, was killed, and Rufina Galvan Sierra, 41, was wounded, Vaughan said.

Sierra was taken to a nearby hospital, but there was no word on her condition.

Investigators determined that Long killed Parker and Carreno before committing suicide, Vaughan said. Long worked at United Turf until August, he said, but investigators haven't determined if that was a factor in the shootings.
