APEX, N.C. — North Carolina's first toll road has been open for six years, but the number of drivers using the Triangle Expressway has recently surged.

According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, 50,000 drivers are now using the Triangle Expressway every day -- an increase of 10,000 people in only a few years. When asked about the spoke, DOT officials said it recently became cheaper to have the tools needed to pay for your ride.

For example, Quick Pass stickers used to be $5, but they're now free to drivers. Quick Pass E-ZPass devices went down from $20 to $7.40.

The Quick Pass price drop became a bargain for Triangle Expressway drivers when toll rates went up this year. If you use a Quick Pass, it costs $3.25 to drive the length of the toll road from NC-147 in Durham to NC-55 near Holly Springs. Drivers who use the toll road without the pass could pay close to $5 a day.

The DOT said paying toll fees continues to be an issue for drivers, as the fees can become large if they are paid late.
