Dole hits 'Godless' message again in new ad
Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole was back on the airwaves Friday with a new ad that again decries ties she says her rival has to an atheist group.Posted — Updated
Dole says in the ad that the faith of Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan is not the question. The incumbent says the facts are that Godless Americans held a fund-raiser in her honor in Boston.
An adviser for Godless Americans held a fund-raiser at his home. The event was not billed as a Godless Americans event, and other hosts included an ambassador and U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
Hagan filed suit against Dole on Thursday, saying an initial ad on the subject was defamatory. Dole's campaign filed a motion Friday to get the case dismissed.
The initial ad ended with a picture of Hagan and a woman's voice declaring, "There is no God." Dole ends her new ad by asking voters, "If Godless Americans threw a party in your honor, would you go?"
The dispute comes in the final days of a tight race between the two. A WRAL News poll released Wednesday showed Dole holding a 46 to 42 percent lead, with 9 percent of voters still undecided.
