ZEBULON, N.C. — Two dogs were killed in a Zebulon house fire sparked by a lightning strike Wednesday night.

Authorities said lightning from severe storms moving through the area struck home on N.C. Highway 97 West at about 6:20 p.m.

The lightning struck the home near the kitchen and the flames spread through the house in about three minutes, authorities said.

Officials said 20 firefighters worked for about a half hour to get the fire under control.

Authorities said the woman who lives in the house was not home when the fire started, but two small dogs were killed in the blaze.

Authorities said an urn inside the home, which contained the ashes of the homeowner’s grandmother, made it out of the fire undamaged.

Officials said the woman will be able to re-enter the home Thursday, but the house sustained significant damage to the left side.
