ZEBULON, N.C. — Jack Denton lives in Newport, a coastal neighborhood devastated by flooding during Hurricane Florence.

"I've been there for 18 years through a whole bunch of storms," Denton said. "This is the first one I had ever seen that just covered my roof."

Denton, who is disabled, was forced out of his home and had to leave his dogs -- AC-DC and Babes -- behind.

About the same time, some people from the animal rescue group Cause for Paws set out with their kayaks in Denton's neighborhood.

"We had a call that two dogs were trapped on a roof and we had kayaks so we said, 'We'll go out there and see if we can help,'" said Nicole Kincaid, program director for Cause for Paws.

"We paddled out there and, sure enough, found the dogs trapped on the roof."

With some effort, the team was able to rescue AC-DC and Babes. They posted pictures of the dogs all over social media hoping to find someone looking for them.

"I was so worried," Denton said. "I was going to the dog pound place every single day."

The effort paid off. Cause for Paws was able to reunite the dogs with their pal in Zebulon -- a long journey complete.

"It's just jumping out of my heart," Denton said. "I am very excited to see them because I didn't think I would get them back or anything else."

"That makes me so happy," Kincaid said. "That's what we want in the end is to keep owners with their pets as much as possible."

The reward for the group's effort? Grateful wags -- and a big smile.

"I wanted to tell them thank you very much for what they did for me," Denton said. "I really, really appreciate it."
