SAN JOSE, CALIF. — What started out as a simple walk for a California man and his dog ended at the emergency vet.

Loki, a 10-year-old-husky, was poisoned by drugs during the walk. His owner, David Espinal, said Loki tore up and down the street for 10 to 15 minutes. The dog was acting so erratically that Espinal took him to the vet.

There, tests showed Loki had ingested meth.

"I didn't think he could just rummage through the bushes and find meth," Espinal said.

"Our doctors used to see a couple cases a year, a handful of cases. Now we're seeing one to two a month. In the last 48 hours, we've actually had two cases," said Terra Schorpp, hospital director of MedVet.

Veterinarians at the clinic say most of the cases they see happen when dogs walk near homeless encampments. Without treatment, meth poisoning can cause organ damage or be life-threatening.
