DURHAM, N.C. — The Bull City's first dog-focused bar opens its doors this weekend.
Theresa Chu and Scott Beaudry are the co-owners of Barley Labs, a beer-grain dog treat business. The two announced plans in October to expand the company to include a bar and gift shop in BB&T Plaza, at 4015 University Dr.

"Five years ago, we started Barley Labs as a way to celebrate two of the things we love most — dogs and beer," Chu said at the time. "Our dream was always to have a space where we could celebrate these loves in a larger way. Finally, we are able to make that dream a reality."

Barley Labs, which opens on Saturday at noon, will serve craft beer, bottled selections and offer growler fills. There will be indoor and outdoor seating. The retail part of the shop wll offer gifts for dogs and beer lovers.

The venue will offer free dog treat samples, beds and toys for dogs to enjoy in the store, educational workshops and adoption events.

A grand opening celebration is planned March 17.

Barley Labs uses barley from Fullsteam Brewery's Southern Lager when creating its all-natural treats. In addition to being available online, the treats are also sold locally at Parker and Otis, Fullsteam Brewery and Weaver Street Market.
