NEW YORK — A dog died on a United Airlines flight Monday after a flight attendant forced a passenger to put the pet in an overhead bin.

A passenger on the flight posted to Facebook about the incident, saying the dog was in a TSA-approved carrier when a flight attendant forced the dog’s owner to place the carrier in the overhead bin with the dog still inside.

The dog died by the end of the flight.

United Airlines issued an apology to the passenger, saying, in part, that the dog should never have been placed in the overhead bin and “we assume full responsibility for this tragedy.”

The airline said an investigation into the incident is underway
