A small dog abandoned and injured on the streets of Beijing, China, has now found a loving home here in the Triangle.

It took years to make it happen.

Kai Wei was visiting her native Beijing when she walked past a restaurant and found a lost soul.

“It raised my concern right away,” said Wei.

The small dog was 8-year-old Rain, abandoned by its owner. Its leg was broken after being kicked by someone passing on the street.

“I was thinking, 'Who is going to take care of him when I leave?'” said Wei.

As Wei returned to her home in Cary, she arranged to have Rain boarded and cared for back in China.

“I just want to be there to guard his life,” said Wei.

The next step would be much harder – getting Rain to North Carolina.

The process took more than two years, and the flight alone cost Wei $3,000.

Rain finally touched down at the SPCA of Wake County.

This little dog’s big story was posted on their Facebook page. Hundreds fell in love, including Rachel Miller.

“Rain just popped up and I read the story and was like, 'This is absolutely incredible,'” said Miller.

She and her husband Brandon were chosen to give Rain a new home

“Kai is so amazing, doing what she did," said Miller. "What an incredible story.”

After all her effort and expense, Wei said she feels "nothing but happy.”
