GARNER, N.C. — It’s peak season at North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles offices and that means long wait times for some customers.

Last year during the last two weeks of August, wait times averaged about 100 minutes.

DMV administrators made some changes to speed up the times and it appears that wait times are different depending on where you go and what service you require. But being that the last two weeks of August are consisted the busiest time? It’s best to wait.

On Wednesday, visitors to the DMV location off Spring Forest Road encountered about an hour wait.

One visitor told WRAL News that he clocked a wait time of an "hour and six minutes" to get a Real ID.

“I’m pretty happy (because) I can leave now," the visitor said. "It’s pretty awesome.”

But for some it wasn’t fast enough.

Some in need of DMV services hoped to get their car registered in a New York Minute.

“We decided to leave," one woman said. "It was a little too long.”

When WRAL News visited the Garner DMV location, only two people were working at the office and the wait times averaged two hours.

It was a shorter wait for Makila Brice.

“I took the written test for my drivers license and that took about 20 minutes,” she said.

Said Carlina Franco: "I came in because I just relocated from Jersey and I was trying to replace my drivers license.”

For customers who do visit the DMV during the busiest of time of the year:

  • Visit during Saturday hours and extended hours at locations that offer them.
  • Go to MyNCDMV for services that can be completed online.
  • Wait until after peak season to get a REAL ID.
