RALEIGH, N.C. — John Robinson, director of the DMV's License and Theft Bureau, has announced plans to step down June 14.

Robinson, 59, runs the division which investigates vehicle thefts and fraud as well as emissions inspections. He has been employed by the state for 21 years.

Robinson leaves just two weeks after two members of his 200-person staff were placed on leave as part of an investigation into the hiring of a friend of Robinson's. DMV Commissioner Bill Gore said the investigation and the timing of Robinson's retirement are unrelated.
