"At first I thought it was awesome," <a href="https://www.pilotonline.com/life/wildlife-nature/vp-nw-local-fisher-man-runs-into-great-white-shark-in-outer-banks-20211222-apegqf5pd5hdrarsnguetxar7u-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scherrer told The Viriginian-Pilot</a>.

Faced with one of Earth's great predators, Scherrer was armed as well. A spearfisherman by trade, he kept his gun between himself and the shark. It's visible in the video he recorded as he swims alongside the shark.

When the shark makes a turn toward Scherrer, the speargun provides perspective of just how close it comes before turning and swimming away.
