— Emlyn Koster, director of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, is no longer serving in that role, WRAL confirmed Tuesday.

His appointment as director ended Tuesday, state Department of Natural and Cultural resources spokeswoman Michele Walker said.

The museum’s deputy director, Jason Cryan, will become interim director while the department conducts a nationwide search for its new director.

A geologist, Koster joined the museum in January 2013.

In 2014, the museum was one of 10 recipients of the 2014 National Medal for Museum and Library Science, which is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for services to the community.
