Destination: The Diapering Doula in Morrisville

Karissa Binkley began as a doula first, helping moms through the experience of labor and delivery.

But she quickly realized that she needed more income than just the one a doula typically makes. That's when she did some research and realized there was an opening here for a cloth diaper service.

Binkley's method for cleaning and delivering diapers may just make her the most eco-friendly diaper service in the country, she tells me. Her diapers are washed with the greenest detergents in efficient washing machines and delivered in an eco-friendly car.

The Diapering Doula also is entirely doula run. So if a new mom not only needs diapers, but has a question about their baby, the woman delivering her diapers or on the phone at the store can offer some help or point them in the right direction.

At The Diapering Doula store, Binkley offers a variety of classes and programs for moms and dads. They include a new moms group at 11 a.m. Tuesdays, a La Leche League Breastfeeding Cafe at noon on Thursdays and a cloth diapering tutorial at 2 p.m. on Saturdays led by Binkley.

I attended the new moms group this Tuesday where moms talked about everything from mom guilt to teething. It was a friendly, supportive atmosphere where the moms talked openly about their experiences or troubles.

Other regular programs include breastfeeding classes, information on pumps (which the store rents), and sign language for babies. Most programs are free, though some require a small fee. Binkley tells me that instructors all are certified in their specialty and use her space for free as long as they keep their costs down for participants.

"It's funny because a lot of people call us a community center," said Binkley, who is expecting her first child in about a month. "They don't realize we're a store."
