If you owe NC state taxes, you'll want to pay by the original deadline, April 15 or next Wednesday.

Yes, the tax deadline is delayed, but if you owe the state, you'll pay a penalty for taking advantage of that extension. 5 On Your Side's Monica Laliberte learned taxpayers who don't pay by next Wednesday will be charged 5% interest on what's owed.
Current North Carolina law prevents the NC Department of Revenue from waiving accrued interest. Federal taxes are different. The IRS will not charge interest if you pay by the new date, July 15.

The IRS says the coronavirus slowdown is not impacting refunds and that most are issued within 21 days.

A spokesman with North Carolina's Department of Revenue also said there are no virus-related delays, but some refunds may take longer as they work to fight identity theft. The goal is to issue refunds within six weeks for returns filed online, 12 weeks if you mailed it in.

State refunds that take longer than 45 days will earn interest.
