CANTON, N.C. — The Haywood County Sheriff's Office confirms a deputy was involved in a fatal shooting on Tuesday.
WLOS News reports deputies and police officers responded to a report of a person armed with a rifle on Old Asheville Highway near Canton around 3 a.m.
A suspect fired at officers, officials said, striking a deputy sheriff. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was struck and killed.
Authorities say the deputy was taken to a local hospital and is receiving medical treatment.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation into the shooting.
