CLINTON, N.C. — A man was found shot to death after a vehicle crash in Sampson County.

Thursday night, Sampson County Sheriff's deputies found a man had been shot several times in front of a home on H B Lewis Road in Clinton.

William Sampson was pronounced dead. Sampson, who lived in Clinton, was 35 years old.

Investigators said Sampson was involved in a crash earlier that day. Acquaintances of others linked to the crash followed Sampson and a shooting occurred, according to deputies.

Daniel Moore, 24, was identified as a suspect. On Friday, Moore turned himself in at the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, where he was charged with murder and placed in the detention center without bond.

“This was a senseless act of violence over property damage that could have been resolved legally," said Sheriff Jimmy Thornton. "Now, one family is burying a loved one and another is grieving over young man who may spend the rest of his life in prison or worse.”

An investigation is ongoing.
