HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Deputies arrested a Durham man Friday after they say he broke into a Hillsborough home and stole a 5-gallon water bottle filled with more than $600 worth of coins.

Lucas Elijah Stauffer-Weller, 32, of 6309 Garrett Road, was charged with second-degree burglary and damage to property.

Police said that Stauffer-Weller cut himself on the arms when he broke into a house on Pleasant Green Road. He tried to steal the bottle, which the homeowner was using for his vacation savings, but when he discovered that it was too heavy to carry, he called a taxi, investigators said.

The taxi driver took him to Walmart to use the coin-counting machine. He left with $665, investigators said, but left the bottle, which had blood on it, at the store.

Investigators used the blood evidence to identify Stauffer-Weller.

He was being held in the Orange County jail Tuesday on a $22,000 bond.
