MORRISVILLE, N.C. — More than a dozen flights are canceled at RDU International Airport again on Tuesday morning as the July 4th weekend looms.

The development comes just days before travel starts picking up for the busy holiday. Hundreds of flights across the country were canceled over the weekend with weather and staff shortages being two of the reasons given by officials.

The TSA said its agents screened almost 2.5 million passengers at airport security checkpoints nationwide Sunday. On Monday, foot traffic was starting to pick up around 5 a.m. at RDU.

On Sunday, there were more than 700 cancellations throughout the U.S. Delta Air Lines alone canceled at least 224 flights on Sunday. United Airlines canceled 71 flights and American Airlines canceled 66 flights.
RDU is seeing passenger traffic that's close to pre-pandemic levels, leading airport officials to believe demand is back to normal. There were also above-normal delays and cancellations on Memorial Day weekend.
